Extended Stay Program
DISCOVERY PLACE EXTENDED STAY
30 days is a great beginning. The best is ahead.
“I wasn’t sure about going to Discovery Place Extended Stay after a month in treatment, but I did it anyway. Everyone who knew about my relapses in the past was telling me to do it. So for once in my life I listened. It wasn’t like I had a lot to hurry back to, you know. What happened in Extended Care is hard to say. After a while, it just seemed like this was a better way to live. We all helped each other. Somehow, we were managed to have fun. It was a long time, but it was worth it. I’ve really changed and getting the chance to do this is part of what changed me.”
- Eric
It’s a fact. Statistics show that extended treatment programs improve long term sobriety.
91% of men who have participated in Discovery Place Extended Stay are still sober.
It’s about more than not drinking or taking drugs. Extended Stay from Discovery Place provides the support and guidance to help a man in recovery practice the principles of the 12 steps in all his affairs. They greatly improve the odds a man will stay sober, and reinforce life behaviors that pave the road of recovery for an entire family.
At $4800 for each 30 days, the benefits of staying on the path far outweigh the cost.
The First 90 Days of Recovery are Critical
By staying 90 days in guided recovery, a man ensures his new way of life gets continued support.
“I just wasn’t ready to head back home and face my friends again. I didn’t like my chances. My family was still worried to death and I had legal problems. When Extended Care was suggested by my Guide , I decided to do it and I’m glad. After an extra month, I was ready to go back home. I felt like I had my recovery feet firmly under me. I’ m sober today, one day at a time and I’m involved in my own program back home. Life is so much better sober.”
-Brian

Extended Stay Facilities
Guests in Extended Stay stay off-campus in nearby downtown Dickson, Tennessee (population 39,000). It is a comfortable home for eight guests, with rooms shared by two persons. The house manager lives on-site. Experience shows this kind of modest, shared living is the most effective arrangement for helping develop fundamentals of a recovery lifestyle. (See schedule)
Guests spend morning and evening at the home, and the day offsite at recovery meetings, lectures, social events and serving at charitable agencies in and around Nashville. Each receives a weekly shopping allowance. The men share responsibility for the purchasing, preparation and clean up for many of their own meals. Other meals are at the Discovery Place campus. Extended Care guests also attend talks and workshops, AA meetings and alumni events. Health club access is available at no additional cost, and men are encouraged to participate. (see schedule)
Transportation to and from events is provided. Guests also occasionally walk to one of the 38 weekly AA meetings in downtown Dickson. As time passes and a new way of living takes hold, other privileges are extended.
Our Approach
Discovery Place Extended Care offers programs up to 90 days in length.
The Discovery Place 30 to 60 Day Extended Stay Program
Our 30 to 60 Day Extended Stay Program is a proactive approach to a successful transition into a life of recovery from drugs and alcohol. It is often the best choice for those who are in recovery for the first time. It is always the most responsible choice for those who have struggled with relapse.
Guests continue to learn and practice the personal responsibility necessary for meaningful, rewarding lives. Specialized Extended Care recovery guides, topical speakers and activities add to the ongoing insight of Discovery Place's 30-day program guides, staff and volunteers.
During Extended Care, guests live and share a safe, convenient extended care home and begin to enjoy some of the freedoms that come with recovery within the structure of a daily schedule. (see schedule)
Each Extended Care program is personalized, allowing each man to learn what he has in common with others who are like him. The program is generally focused on learning to live comfortably while practicing the 12 steps as an ongoing part of life. Guests attend a wide variety of outside recovery meetings and healthy social events, where they find opportunities to build successful relationships. Finally, the Discovery Place 30 to 60 Day Extended Care Program includes an introduction to building the life skills needed to reduce personal stress, promote physical health and mental wellness, and avoid relapse.
The Discovery Place 60 to 90 Day Extended Stay Program
While most men are comfortable with the results they achieve in our 30 to 60 Day Extended Stay Program, some continue for 90 days or longer. The decision to undertake a longer-term program is highly individual. In cases such as chronic relapse, a longer period of transition is almost always a better option. Discovery Place works with guests, families, medical advisors, counselors and therapists to create a program of recovery for each individual.
Discovery Place is highly flexible. Our goal is to help men begin a new life free from drug and alcohol addiction. Taking the time to get it right can save a marriage, a family or a life.
Service Work as a Part of Recovery
Men in Extended Stay come to appreciate the joy of “giving back what was so freely given to them.” They practice this daily - among themselves, with others in recovery, and in the community.
We believe being of service is a cornerstone of successful recovery. Ask anyone who is truly enjoying life, and you will often hear that being of service is a key part of living happy, joyous and free. Each week our men volunteer at recovery meetings and events. They also volunteer at selected community charities in the greater Nashville area.
For most of our men, service opportunities become the highlight of their time in Extended Care.
74% of men who participate in Discovery Place Extended Care
report they are still involved in service a year after they have left.
These men have learned to take the help they have received and gratefully give back to others.
“Working at 2nd Harvest Food Bank was great. We set some new records for productivity and were actually recognized as their best volunteers. It makes you feel good about yourself to work down there. Your own problems don’t seem all that important when you think about the people who need this food. Anyone of us could be hungry some day. It’s a good thing to remember if you start thinking about using.”
- Kyle
The 12th and final Step of Alcoholics Anonymous states:
“Having had a Spiritual Awakening as a result of these Steps we tried to carry this message to alcoholics and to practice these principles in all our affairs.”
In Discovery Place Extended Stay, men enjoy the blessing of being of service to family, friends and community.
Extended Stay Services
Family Services
Extended Stay is focused on learning to live comfortably within a 12 Step program of recovery. Guests and families are encouraged to continue in the same family program practiced in the initial 30 days of recovery at Discovery Place. The families of men who join Extended Care after attending treatment programs in other facilities are also invited.
Continuing Care and Alumni Follow-up
All Extended Stay guests participate in our Continuing Care program. Activities include alumni events such as white water rafting, a Super Bowl party, annual picnic, concerts, a bowling tournament and a golf tournament. Guests also attend Life Lessons in Recovery workshops and Friday Night Family Nights, which include open AA and Al-Anon meetings, with child care provided.
Extended Stay guests also benefit from our Alumni Follow-up. Guests are called by trained Discovery Place alumni 12 times in the first 12 weeks after commencement, and quarterly for the remainder of the first year. Graduates are asked to report on their ongoing sobriety, recovery behaviors, meeting attendance, sponsor assignments, prayer and meditation practices, and continuing commitment to service. If we discover that a man is slipping, recovery guides will contact him and try to help.
Medical, Dental & Other Personal Services
Discovery Place dispenses prescribed medications to Extended Care guests. On admission, guests are required to order prescription medications from a local pharmacy that "blister packs" prescribed dosages. If a medical doctor, dentist, psychiatrist or therapist is required, Discovery Place will facilitate transportation to and from appointments.
Admissions Requirements and Pricing
Guests attending our Extended Stay program must have completed the Discovery Place 30 day program or a similar program of recovery. Some who are actively involved in Alcoholics Anonymous and have 30 days of continuous sobriety that can be verified by a sponsor may be admitted without prior attendance in a 30 day program.
Discovery Place Extended Stay is available at $4,800 per 30 day increment of care. Fees for each 30 day increment are payable in advance. Guests who leave against staff advice during each 30 day increment of care will not receive a refund.
For questions regarding admissions or pricing, call 1-800-725-0922.

The standard visitation time for Extended Stay guests is Sunday from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. After the first two weeks of care, at the discretion of the staff, some guests are allowed to have half or full day passes on Saturday.
