Report on Volunteers In a typical week at Discovery Place volunteers spend over 150 hours. From April 1 st to the 15th, for example, 308.5 hours of valuable time was contributed to the men at Discovery Place in the form of mentoring, speaking , driving, and administrative tasks. Without the consistent contributions of men like Gordon Smith, Don Howell, Jason Buchanon, Mark Turner, Matt Jacob,Sean Brier-Braxton and Jonathan Deaver Discovery Place would not have the impact that it has on the lives of men and their families who take part in our programs. Special Thanks to Aaron Brown for mentoring our volunteers and providing guidance to them as they help carry the message. Thank you. SPOTLIGHT VOLUNTEER We here at Discovery Placed are blessed with some really great volunteers. It is such a diverse bunch of guys. We have young and old, well to do and the just getting bye. We have old timers as well as new comers. As the Big Book says "We are people wonderful." (bb p.17) Each issue of the dispatch we are going to spotlight a volunteer. Tell you a little bit about him and let the readers know what a great contribution they are making to Discovery Place and the world around them. In this issue of the dispatch, our featured volunteer is Brian Briggs. For those of you who don’t know, Brian is an alumnus of Discovery Place as well as past employee. Brian just recently celebrated one year of sobriety and is a regular on Tuesday nights. He comes out and leads the 6:30 group. He often brings several guys with him. One thing I can tell you about Brian is that he takes this program very seriously. He never just comes out empty hearted, but brings with him love and enthusiasm for Alcoholics Anonymous. He always comes prepared with a topic and is ready to listen as well as share his experience strength and hope. Those are great assets to have in a volunteer and if that was all Brian did, it would be enough but believe me there is more. Probably the greatest gift that Brian has allowed us is that he has let us in. He has allowed us to watch him grow up in public. Be there through his fears and doubts and shared with us his pain and uneasiness. If you asked Brian why he comes out, he would be quick to tell you that it keeps him sober. But I promise you the guys at Discovery Place are truly blessed to have such a great volunteer give of his time. On a final and personal note I would like to say that Brian has helped me in so many ways. More than anything I would say that Brian has allowed me a front seat to a miracle in the making. A chance to witness a "psychic change" taking place right in front of me. He has revealed to me that nothing counts but thoroughness and honesty. Whenever I am in doubt that God is working in my life, all I need to is to be around Brian and see God working through him. I think I can speak for everyone at Discovery Place when I say that we are all better off with Brian in our lives. |
