Ron Fielder : Executive Director   Andy James : Associate Director
ronf@discoveryplace.info andyj@discoveryplace.info
My name is Ron Fielder and my sobriety date is December 11, 1985. I worked in law enforcement for 35 years. In 1985 I went to treatment and was introduced to recovery. At that time I was convinced that this was the only way I was going to be able to stay sober. I have been blessed with a great sponsor who showed me the way in the literature. He also showed me that service work and sponsorship keeps you sober. Following my sponsor’s direction I have not had to experience relapse. I was volunteering at DP, and in 2004 Joe M. and Euel M. asked me to replace Euel, as he was retiring. I became Executive Director July 1, 2004. This place is about recovery through a spiritual awakening by applying the 12 steps. That is what brought me here and keeps me here.
My name is Andy James and my sobriety date is March 10, 2002. I began drinking and using in high school. Shortly thereafter I also began dealing drugs. When I got out of high school I became an electrician on the side. I continued dealing until I got arrested and court ordered to treatment in 1998. When I commenced treatment I didn’t get a sponsor or go to meetings. I quickly relapsed and almost died. I came to my senses and knew something had to change. I chose to come through Discovery Place and when I commenced I started to take total direction. I got a sponsor, went to meetings, and started getting involved in service work. I drove the guests at Discovery Place to meetings and that eventually led to a part time weekend manager position. I am now a full time CTM and am blessed to be involved in so many peoples recovery. Today I feel I live a happy and purposeful life.

bobo@discoveryplace.info edwards@discoveryplace.info
My name is Bob Overton originally from Nashville I went to TN Tech University and went into the construction industry in the south and southwest. After being arrested in east TN for alcohol related offenses and going through treatment in Knoxville, I began to work as a volunteer for Child and Family Services eventually working full time as a counselor for eight years with abused and abandoned youth with alcohol and drug dependancy issues. While thereI structured a recovery program for the agency. I learned of Discovery Place while attending an AA meeting in Nashville when a gentleman asked me to participate in a book study at DP in January 1999. I knew I wanted to be at DP, to help the suffering alcoholic and celebrated nine of the most spiritually lifting and satisfying years of my life on April 15, 2008.  My name is Edward Steele and my sobriety date is January 7, 1999. Originally From Chattanooga, TN, I graduated from Vanderbilt University in 1977.My career was in banking, finance and sales. I went through my first treatment in May 1997, although I had been introduced to the program by friends in 1991. I relapsed several times prior to my current sobriety datebecause I really wasn't living the program or involved in the fellowship. My counselor at one of my other treatment centers brought me to Discovery Place for the first time in December, 1997. Aware of my background in finance management, Discovery Place hired me in March of 1999.

aaronb@discoveryplace.info brentb@discoveryplace.info
My name is Aaron Brown and my soriety date is October 1, 1990. I was born in Louisiana and at a young age went to Chicago to live with one of my sistersfor a few years. After Chicago, I lived in California most of my adult life. I had my first drink at age 14, and chased that feeling for 22 years. I lost a job that I had held for 15 years due to my drinking. I was told to go see an A&D counselor if I wanted my job back. After seeing her for a weekand lying to her about the way I drank she told me That I needed to go to AA. I told her that I could stop when I wanted to, she said she knew but go anyway. After doing it my way for 6 months I saw i needed to change or die. On October 19, 1990 I got serious. To work at DP is an honor. To help these men rediscover life is an amazing part to be apart of.
My name is Brent Barber and my sobriety date is October 1, 2003. I began drinking in high school and was working in the family business until 1986 when my DUI’s caught up with me. I was court ordered to treatment and I was introduced to this life of recovery. I stayed sober for 5 years and became an Alcohol and Drug Counselor. I then stopped taking direction and quit working the program. I began driving a liquor truck until 2003 when I finally decided I had put myself and my family through enough and decided to try this way of life again. I was hired at Discovery Place as a maintenance man and was told I was the worst ever. I was soon moved to a full time CTM position and my life took a turn. I feel today I am truly living in recovery for the first time. I am very happy and blessed to have a job where I can impact so many people’s lives.
Brian Hicks: Extended Care Guide   Bob Lynch: Guide
brianh@discoveryplace.info blynch@discoveryplace.info
My name is Brian Hicks and my sobriety date is February 15, 2006. I started drinking and using drugs at age 14. My journey in and out of treatment and AA started when I was 21. That lasted 7 years with the longest period of sobriety being 3 months.  Discovery Place opened my mind to a spiritual approach to things that changed my life. When I left DP I entered a recovery house in Dickson, TN and began to volunteer my time to the place that saved my life. In June 2006 I was offered a job.  In January 2007 My father and I opened a recovery house in Dickson and my whole life is geared towards showing others how I recovered and what the program can do.  Today I have the life I dreamed of as a child and I thank God that Discovey Place showed me how to stay sober one day at a time with the help of a twelve step program.   My name is Bob Lynch and my sobriety date is January 16, 2007 I had my first drink at age 20, while in college. It seemed great back then. After college I had a career in marketing where it was accepted to involve alcohol in every aspect of business. While a "functional alcoholic" I managed to lose several jobs, a great deal of money, and a marriage. My drinking progressed to the point that I  couldn't live with alcohol or without it. I went to my first treatment in 2004 and thought I had it under control. A few relapses later each one worse than the last. I finally hit my bottom and was told that DP might very well be my solution, and it was. I checked in January 2007, and was able to develope a spiritual relationship that I'd never had. That is what binds the whole AA program together for me. I moved into a recovery house, found a sponsor, and attend meetings. This is how I want to live Today.
Jack DeFluiter: Admissions Coordinator   Keats Komisar: Adminstrative Assistant
jackd@discoveryplace.info keatsk@discoveryplace.info
My name is Jack DeFluiter and my sobriety date is November 22, 2002. After completing Discovery Place I had no where to go so I stayed here. In April 2003 I was given a position working as the admissions coordinator, and have been here since.
My name is Keats Komisar. My sober date is January 27, 2007. I took my first drink at age eight. After high school, my drinking and drug use got progressively worse and in 1989 I was sentenced to six years in state prison and six months in the county workhouse. Before serving my time I was sent to treatment. It was a life changing event. For many years I put my life into recovery, but after being sober for twelve years I relapsed and stayed in relapse for four years. Through a series of events which was nothing short of Providence, I was given the gift of Discovery Place. Since coming through Discovery Place, I have rediscovered and learned so much more about myself and the people around me. I now have the opportunity to be both a loving and responsible parent to my four children as well as a caring husband. Not to mention I now have the ability to be a friend among friends. Working at Discovery Place has been a real blessing for me. Every time I come here, I am reminded that in recovery, all things are possible.
Bill Leech: Adminstrative Assistant   Hugh Barker-Smith: Adminstrative Assistant
billl@discoveryplace.info hughs@discoveryplace.info
In Septemebr of 2007 I was about to turn 47 and didn't have alot to look forward to. I came from a good family, was well educated, was making a lot of money, still had my law license and didn't have a lot of worries, but I was miserable. I had been to 8 treatment centers over the course of my adult life and had achieved brief periods of sobriety but I was not happy and I certainly wasn't sober. I'm not sure what happened but I had had enough. I checked into Discovery Place and haven't been the same since. Today I get up in the morning and look forward to the day ahead of me. I work and live in and around recovery and am able to contribute what talents I have to an effort that makes me feel good about myself and the people God has allowed me to help.  My name is Hugh Barker-Smith and my sobriety date is August 3, 2006.  I arrived to Discovery Place the day I was released from the jail I used to work in.  I came here thinking that I would do just enough to get my parents off of my back and then would be able to again drink like I had been.  While I was a guest I heard for the first time some things that shocked me.  There were all of these different people telling my story.  I knew that my way hadn't been working but these people seemed genuinely happy and at ease, something I hadn't felt in a very long time. They had something I wanted so I began to do what they did.  And even though I didn't think the program would work for me, I did the work and began to see the results and all it took was a reliance on a power greater than me.  I have been blessed with opportunity to work here and to help those who still suffer.
Jerry Humphreys: Admissions Coordinator   Shane Broadway: Night Guide

My name is Jerry Humphreys and my sobriety date is May 9, 2004. A Nashville native I graduated from UT in 1989 and pursued a career in housing finance and sales. I came through Discovery Place in August of 2002, and they got me back on track by helping me to get a sponsor, a home group, and a service commitment. Working with Discovery Place has been very rewarding by helping to guide men toward the beginning of a sober life.  My name is Shane Broadway and my sobriety date is September 30, 2007. I started drinking and using drugs when I was 13. By the time I was 39 I had lost everything in my life of substance; 2 wives, 2 sons, the love of my family, all of my friends, and most importantly me. I had reached the jumping off place, nothing mattered any more. After 10 plus in and out of AA and countless relapses I came back to DP for the second time. Thanks to my dear friend Andy J, the rest of the staff at DP, and the help of a sponsor and practicing the spiritual principles of the program, I have become useful and purposefully whole . I am a part of my sons lives, and my parents trust me again. I am able to be of service and to see men rebuild their lives. most importantly I love myself. God is doing for me what I can't do for myself.
David Stephens: Weekend Guide   Bob Jamison: Night Guide

My name is David Stephens and my sobriety date is August 7, 2006. I am originally from Chattanooga, TN. I had my first drink at the age of 14, and shortly after began to drink and do drugs on a daily basis for the next five years. Due to my alcoholism I began to lose touch with myself, family, and reality. Then when I was 19 I was arrested in my parents backyard with a DUI and a list of charges. Out of fear and a desire to change I asked for help and because of another alcoholic in town I found out about Discovery Place. On arrival the love, honesty, and brotherhood overwhelmed me and I stayed sober for 7 months. I quit doing what I learned here and relapsed. I began to experience the progression and depression as never before and was fortunate enough to make it back. Applying the principles of the program brought me 2 years and 2 months of sobriety before drifting out of the honesty and basics of the program. After 9 months of depression and hopelessness I got back to what I learned here at Discovery Place. When Ron F. asked me to work the weekend shift I was humbled and honored. I am loving every minute of my life these days due to my relationship with God, following directions of my sponsor, and the fellowship and principles of the program. Thank God for Dicovery Place and getting introduced to this way of life. Glory!!!
My name is Bob Jamieson and my sobriety date is April 24, 1996. I used to feel different from others until I took my first drink at age 14. Soon I was drinking and drugging as much and as often as possible. As a result I got into quite a bit of trouble.  One night after a car wreck, I came to in a hospital prison ward, and was told the other person had died.  That started a pattern of DUIs and jail time. After many failed attempts to control my drinking and my life, I finally accepted the fact I couldn't do it by myself. I surrendered to God and AA. I now have friends and fit in with the rest of the world.  I now have a wife, a house, a family, and a wonderful job where I have an opportunity to pass on the gift of a happy, sober life.
John Potts: Night Guide   Jeff Carlton: Weekend Guide

My name is John Potts and my sobriety date is December 25, 1984.  I had my first drunk when I was 14.  I was self conscience and never felt like I quite fit in.  At first, drinking put me at ease and made me feel “a part of”.  I was alcoholic from the beginning and drank for 21 years.  When I finally admitted to myself that I had a problem and wanted to quit drinking, I couldn’t stay quit on my own.  I asked GOD for help and was led to my first A.A. meeting.  Even though I had hit “skid row of the soul”, I still couldn’t picture life without alcohol.  After the meeting, one of the members introduced himself.  He asked if I thought I could just not drink today and come back tomorrow.  I told him I thought I could do that and I did.  Slowly, I learned about the program of action that would provide the power necessary to stay sober one day at a time.  Being an alcoholic has turned out to be the best thing that ever happened to me.  I am grateful to be sober today and working at Discovery Place.

David Self: Out Reach Coordinator   Billy Saunders: Maintenence Supervisor

My name is David Self and my sobriety date is April 9, 1991. I have worked in the retailfabric business most of my life. In 1989 a friend of mine had quit drinking. I use to drink with him and found it hard to believe. In 1991 I got to the point I knew I needed helpso I called him. he took me to my first AA meeting and I admitted I was an alcoholic. The wieght of the world had been lifted. I am fortunate to have been blessed with a great sponsorwho has kept me on the right track. I changed my playgrounds and playmates, developed new friends and a new purposeful life. In early 2005 two friends told me that a secretary was needed here at Discovery Place. I took the position and feel that today I am working God's Will for me. I am truly grateful to be here today.
My name is Billy Saunders and my sobriety March 12, 2004. For a little over the last 20 years I owned a historical renovation & remodeling company. There was a doctor that I was seeing who knew I was having trouble and wanted to know if I wanted help and was willing to go to treatment. The first treatment was in November of 2001. I managed for about 4 months until my relapse. My doctor had put me on an anti-depressant, but soon after I was back to self-medicating. This time it was alcohol and cocaine. I hit my bottom hard and fast. I was almost dead when I arrived at Discovery Place. Between Jack D. and a few others I was allowed to stay even being as sick as I was. If I would have left I would be dead. Before I was even halfway healthy I was allowed to stay and eventually start working. I've been here about a year and a half, and I will continue to do anything I can to help DP. They saved my life.
Robbie Mills: Grounds Keeper   Rickey Horn: Kitchen Staff

My name is Robbie Mills and my sobriety date is September 26, 1998. I began my drinking and using when I was thirteen years old. I worked in construction and in 1989 I picked up 2 DUI’s in a month. I was court ordered to treatment and was introduced to recovery. I stayed dry for about 45 days but I wasn’t finished adding to my story. I kept working construction and was drinking and using anything that would keep me from feeling like me. In 1998 I violated my probation due to my marijuana and drinking. My mom had saved a newspaper article about Discovery Place and I decided I would come out and take a look. I really liked the atmosphere and a week later I checked in. After commencing I began doing some maintenance and yard work. Today I am grateful to be alive and sober. I try to do anything at all that will help the place that saved my life look and feel peaceful and beautiful. It is truly amazing to watch men come here and have their lives change for the better.
My name is Rickey Horn my sobriety date is December 18, 2007. After a constant battle with active alcohol and drug abuse over a period of seven years and several relapses. I had 8 months of sobriety then I caved in to the lifestyle that goes with all sorts of addiction, but mainly crack cocaine and alcohol abuse. Members of my church sought out a program that could finally deal with my active chemical dependancy. Which meant, finding a program that is not like other rehab facilities, but rather a "spiritual retreat" where men like me could learn to deal with addiction, recovery and sobriety. I found that here at Discovery Place.
