Thanksgiving at Discovery Place: Recovery, Football, Gratitude, Good Friends,Turkey & Pumpkin Pie
You may think Thanksgiving weekend in Rehab sounds like a woeful experience. At Discovery place this couldn’t be further from the truth. Guests not only have the certain assurance that they are doing the “right thing” for themselves and their loved ones, but they also have the comfort of being with others who are just like themselves; men who have come to the realization that they can no longer safely consume mood altering substances of any kind.
So what happens at Discovery Place on Thanksgiving weekend? Well, a lot of recovery, a lot of good food, plenty football, a steady stream of activities and guests and a sense of true gratitude for the opportunity to recover from the devastating effects of alcohol and drug addiction.
Thanksgiving Day starts off with a needed opportunity to sleep in followed by morning meditation and big brunch. This is followed by a traditional Thanksgiving “Gratitude” meeting. Later in the afternoon it’s a traditional Turkey dinner and football followed by an evening trip out to a locally sponsored A.A. Thanksgiving feast and an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting. No doubt there will be more football, followed by evening prayer and lights out.
On Friday, Saturday and Sunday the normal weekend schedule is followed. Weekends include Friday Night Family Night ; a time when over 100 visitors from Nashville, Franklin, Murfreesboro and Dickson come to the Discovery Place campus for dinner and a night of AA meetings and Al-Anon meetings . All of our guests participate in this upbeat event and the visitors of guests are encouraged to participate as well. On Saturdays the men also go into Nashville where they attend either “The Living by the Print “AA meeting off Franklin Road or the “Back Room Group” AA meeting at 5925 O’Brien Street. Both of these events are joyful, enthusiastic meetings of people who are enjoying the good life of recovery. And of course, Sunday is family visitation day …..And, of course, more football.
Spending Thanksgiving weekend in Rehab sounds like a lonely ordeal, but in fact it is just the opposite. Getting started on the road to recovery with gratitude in your heart in the company of other men who sincerely want to stop abusing alcohol and drugs can be a truly rewarding experience.
