America in Addiction

SAMHSA (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration) released a National Survey on Drug Use, comparing results from 2009-2010 and 2010-2011. This infographic depicts the results from 2010-2011 according to the categories outlined below.

Interesting Conclusions from the Data

I came to a few interesting conclusions from reviewing the data:

• Washington D.C. has some serious drug problems. Which makes you wonder precisely how high policitians are when they debate the merits of legislative initiatives.
• Rhode Island and Vermont are in the grips of a legitimate substance abuse crisis.
• With all the legalization buzz around Colorado, no one cares to mention they have the highest rate of substance abuse of any state in the union across all six categories. They fall in the top 10 in all categories except Smokiest States.
• North Dakota and South Dakota have the lowest rates of substance abuse with the exception of alcohol.
• California is not the #1 Stoner State. I was literally shocked. Snoop Dogg lied to me.
• The South smokes. A lot.
• I do not want to be a statistician.
• Numbers make my head hurt.
